Allan Martin, a New Zealand native has lived a life filled with passion for sport. After a 40-year career in broadcasting that earned him an OBE, Allen has remained deeply committed to staying active, recently becoming the oldest participant at the IMGA Pan-American Games in Cleveland.

We caught up with Allan to discuss his experiences at the Games, his remarkable achievements, and his advice for those pursuing Masters sports.

Can you give us a little introduction about yourself and your favourite sport?

I was born in New Zealand and the first twenty years of my life were given to farming and I believe my health and longevity was due to the early work ethic and discipline that was installed at that time. At the age of twenty I was employed by a local radio station as an announcer.

This began a career in broadcasting which lasted for the following 40 years, most of the period was spent as a producer/director in and finally executive in television in London, New Zealand and Australia receiving an OBE for my services to television.

I spent the following years completing my education with a PhD from Auckland University.

Sport in various forms has been a constant thread and undoubtedly contribute to my good health and constitution.

You were the oldest competitor at the recent IMGA Pan-American Games in Cleveland – how does it feel to have that achievement?

Being oldest at the games does not bring any great satisfaction unless it is seen as an incentive to others to keep well and fit.

What has been the key to sustaining your love of playing of sport until now?

A sense of achievement in attaining personal goals and the satisfaction of keeping healthy and fit.

Did you enjoy the Games in Cleveland?

Yes, it was very pleasurable meeting other competitors from all over the world and comparing experiences.

The vibrant city of Cleveland and the state of Ohio contributed to my general enjoyment of the Games.

Any career highlights/favourite moments/greatest achievement?

My greatest achievement would be passing the final exam (defence) for my PhD, at the age of 80 and making the decision to choose the right woman to marry at the age of 30.

How important is playing sport to your health and mental wellbeing?

It has been a major influence. To achieve any success in sport, it requires the discipline to continue the regime of exercise.

What is your advice to anyone considering pursuing masters sport?

The Masters Games ensures the old saying that “it is never too late” has some meaning.

What was your favourite part of attending the Pan-American Games in Cleveland?

Being managed by my son and the good spirit and enthusiasm of the volunteers.
