Competitive cycling now takes many forms. Road, Mountain and Track cycling have all had competitions at the Masters Games. Road racing is the most popular professional form of bicycle racing, in terms of numbers of competitors, events and spectators. The two most common competition formats are mass start events, where riders start simultaneously (though sometimes with a handicap) and race to set finish point; and time trials, where individual riders or teams race a course alone against the clock. Stage races or “tours” take multiple consist of several mass-start or time-trial stages ridden consecutively.Professional racing originated in Western Europe, centred in France, Spain, Italy and the Low Countries. Since the mid-1980s, the sport has diversified, with professional races now held on all continents of the globe. Semi-professional and amateur races are also held in many countries.

Age categories

Men & Women: 30+, 35+, 40+, 45+, 50+, 55+, 60+, 65+, 70+, 75+, 80+, 85+, 90+, 95+
Track (Team Sprint Men & Women): <135, >135

The age category you will compete in for Cycling will be determined as at 31 December of the year of the event. For example, if you are 39 during Games time but have turned 40 by 31 December, you would compete in the 40-44 age category.

Event definitions

One-day race

The maximum distance is determined as follows:
MM 30+: 120 – 160 km
MM 50+: 80 – 100 km
MM 65+: 40 – 80 km
WM 30+: 80 – 120 km
WM 40+: 40 – 80 km

Individual time trial

The maximum distance is determined as follows:
MM 30+: 40 km
MM 50+: 30 km
MM 60+: 20 km
WM 30+: 30 km
WM 50+: 20 km

M 40+ : 750m Individual Time Trail
M 30+ : 1000m Individual Time Trail
M 50+ / W 30+ : 2000m Individual Pursuit
M 30+ : 3000m Individual Pursuit
M 45+ / W 30+ : 5km Scratch
M 30+ : 10km Scratch
M 60+ / W 45+ : 10km Points Race
W 40+ : 12.5km Points Race
M 50+ : W 30+: 15km Points Race
M 40+ : 20km Points Race
M 30+ : 30km Points Race

Men’s/Women’s : All age categories: Sprint (3 laps)
Men’s/Women’s : <135 years and >135 years: Team Sprint (3 riders)

Mountain Bike

Mountain Bike Cross Country 20km-30km : M 50+ / W 50+
Mountain Bike Cross Country 25km-35km : M 40+ / W 40+
Mountain Bike Cross Country 40km-50km : M 30+ / W 30+
