John Scott, a passionate curler of 27 years from Ontario, Canada, only began the sport to help keep him active in the winter months. What started as a winter hobby quickly grew into a lifelong love for the sport. Now retired, John and his wife Judy enjoy traveling the world, often with curling as part of their adventures.

Recently, John competed at the IMGA Pan-American Games in Cleveland, where he and his team, had a fantastic time on and off the ice. We caught up with John to discuss his love for curling, his experiences at the Games, and his advice for those considering Masters sports.

Can you give us a little introduction about yourself and your favourite sport?

My name is John Scott, and I’ve been happily married to my wonderful wife Judy for 46 years. We have three daughters and, four grandchildren, with a fifth on the way.

I started Curling some 27 years ago at the age of 40. It was an activity to keep me busy during the winter. As the years went by, my knowledge, ability and love of the game kept growing.

Now that I’m retired, my wife and I love traveling the world, and if that travel includes Curling, so much the better.

You competed in Curling  at the recent IMGA Pan-American Games in Cleveland – did you enjoy the competition?

My team of Judy, Bryan & Karen had a blast!

We have many friends that live in Cleveland. We were fortunate enough to spend time with some and even got to play against others during the competition.

The Cleveland Skating Club was a great venue for the Curling event. The Organising Committee, the Volunteers, as well as our home hosts Roy & MaryAnn certainly made us feel welcome. The Ice conditions were near perfect, thanks to Shawn Olesen & the USA ICE Team.

What has been the key to sustaining your love of curling for 27 years?

The ability to improve at the game, to make new acquaintances, to stay physically active and (of course,) the social aspect after the games.

Did you enjoy the Games in Cleveland?

We had a fabulous time in Cleveland!

Besides competing, we spent time with friends, ate at some excellent restaurants and still had time to watch some others sports at various venues during the Games. We also went to a Guardians baseball game and attended an evening event at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Any career highlights?

I enjoy competing in local play-downs & attending International Bonspiels.
Favourite moments include competing in my first Winter World Master Games, Quebec City in 2015. Every WWMG since then, and of course, my first Pan-Am Master Games here in Cleveland.

You have attended 3 previous Winter Masters Games, what keeps bringing you back to the events?

I love the game, the competition, the camaraderie and the social gatherings of Broom-stacking

Furthermore, I cherish the opportunity to travel the world doing it!

How important is playing sport to your health and mental wellbeing?

It is very important to stay active whilst playing the sport you enjoy. It allows me to maintain physical wellbeing and perhaps relieve some stress.

What is your advice to anyone considering pursuing Masters sport?

Go for it!!! Just do it. It allows you to continue enjoying the sport you love. You may even travel to different parts of the world.
