Bill Robb has been a dedicated distance runner since 1979, boasting an impressive record of 1,050 races. Bill’s journey exemplifies true Masters spirit, through his lifelong commitment and passion to athletics.

Recently, Bill competed at the IMGA Pan-American Games in Cleveland. We caught up with him to hear about his experiences at the Games and his enduring love for the sport.

Can you give us a little introduction about yourself and your favourite sport?

My name is Bill Robb, a retired teacher originally from Kansas City, Missouri. I grew up in Northeast, Ohio and reside in Amherst, Oh. I have been a distance runner since 1979. I have run 1,050 races to date. Out of these races 84 half marathons, and 44 marathons.

You competed at the recent IMGA Pan-American Games in Cleveland – did you enjoy the competition?

In the IMGA Pan-American Games Cleveland I ran the 800M on the track and the half marathon on the roads. I enjoyed the games, because it was the first time in the United States. I enjoyed the somewhat like Olympic Games format being held here locally.

My favourite part was being there with my friends and meeting new friends from other countries.

You have run an incredible 44 marathons and 83 half marathons in your time, what has been the key to sustaining your love of sport until now?

My love for running is charged by me competing in races in my age group, the awesome people and friends you make over the years, and what it does to improve and extend your life.

Any career highlights/favourite moments/greatest achievement?
My favourite moments from running would have to be my three Boston Marathons. My last one was the 100th running which made running history. Completing my 1,000 race the Haunted Forest Half Marathon. I missed winning my age group in my 1,000th race by a half of a hundredth of a second.
The Pan – American Master games was a great moment too.
How important is playing sport to your health and mental wellbeing?

Running is a great sport for promoting good health and mental health. I see it as the Fountain of Youth.

What is your advice to anyone considering pursuing master’s sport?
I would advise them to get a physical and check with their doctor before starting any sport later in life. The second thing is to always listen to your body and make sure you take rest days.
