The International Masters Games Association signed a contract on 21 March 2023 that gives Abu Dhabi the rights to host and organize the Open Masters Series in 2026. The first-ever Masters Games in the Middle East which will take place in March supports the development of the sports sector and its direct positive impact on economic, tourism, and promotional resources.
In addition to their keenness to embrace elite international events, the Masters Games further establishes the role of Abu Dhabi in promoting opportunities for global communication and world peace. The Games comprises 30 sporting disciplines for all physical abilities in different age groups for over 25 years without an upper age limit.
The objective is to encourage sports participation for all residents, expats, and athletes from all over the world to improve physical and mental health in the community, build bridges of interaction between generations to strengthen the sports ecosystem and develop sports facilities while highlighting culture, heritage, and traditions.
The capital city is expected to host between 5,000-10,000 athletes over nine days of competitions that include over 20 sports.
The inaugural Masters Games was held in Toronto, Canada, in 1985, and more than 200,000 male and female athletes have participated in the tournaments since their inception until now.

His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, affirmed that choosing the capital city, Abu Dhabi, to host the 2026 Masters Games Series is yet another success in a chain that has been achieved thanks to the vision and support of the country’s wise leadership. “The support of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE is a major reason behind Abu Dhabi winning the hosting of the global event that we are so proud of.” His Highness said. “With the upcoming event to be held for the first time in the Middle East, it further proves Abu Dhabi’s leading position in hosting major global sporting events. Al Awani pointed out that the series is a great and valuable addition to the agenda of sporting events hosted and organized by Abu Dhabi, which confirms the confidence of the international federations in the infrastructure and human resources capable of making it a success.
